Walton (Walt) J. Sugrue, Sr.

Walt was born in Brooklyn, NY on December 7, 1932. He peacefully went to the Lord on December 9, 2024. He was the son of Charles and Ethel (Haverity) Sugrue. He graduated from Nutley High School, New Jersey in June 1950. He enlisted in the Army Reserves after graduation. His unit was called up November 1950 due to the Korean War. He was deployed to Korea in January 1951. He enlisted to active-duty status in the Army in November 1951. He served two tours in Korea, three tours in Germany, and a tour in Japan, Greenland and Canada. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and several service medals for the countries he served in.

After retiring from the Army in 1971 at Camp Drum, NY he worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company from 1971-1981. He owned and operated Walton J. Sugrue Insurance Agency in Lowville, NY from 1981 until his retirement in 1995.

Walt is a member of the American Legion, #162 and Lowville VFW. He is a past member of the Lowville Elks. He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, playing golf, and woodworking. Prior to his health decline, he also enjoyed skiing, snowmobiling, camping, fishing, hunting and boating.

Walt married Beverley Seymour October 31, 1953, in Canada. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1978. His second marriage also ended in a divorce. Walt married Maureen Grafton July 6, 1991, in Lowville, NY. The couple lived in Brantingham, NY until November 2024, when they moved to Brookside Senior Living Community, Lowville, NY.

Walt and Beverley had seven children together: Debra Henderson, Pamelia, NY, Walton (Rachel), Chaumont, NY, Joyce (Donald) Wilder, Watertown, NY, Leonard, Rochester, NY, Patricia (David) Pharoah, Calcium, NY, and Judy (William) Crast, Leesburg, FL. His son Michael died in 2005.

Walt was also predeceased by his parents, brothers Leonard and Charles, his first and second wife, a son-in-law, John Henderson, and a great granddaughter Whitley Sugrue.

Walt is survived by his wife Maureen, Lowville, NY, his six children, his brother John R. Sugrue, Watertown, NY, stepson Carl Golas, Jr. (Amanda Delles), Watson, NY, a stepdaughter Colleen (Jeffrey) Rast, Queen Creek, AZ, 18 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours. The funeral will on Friday, December 13, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Forest Presbyterian Church, Lyons Falls, NY with Pastor Elizabeth Smith officiating. A Celebration of Life will follow the funeral at the Lowville VFW, 7752 W. State Street, Lowville, NY. Donations of a covered dish may be delivered after 9:00 A.M. on Friday at the VFW. There will be a spring burial in Brantingham Cemetery with Military Honors.
