PALMYRA - Thomas D. Hulbert, 80, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Rochester General Hospital in Rochester, surrounded by the love of his family.
Tom was born on September 22, 1945, in Lowville, the son of the late Spencer W. and Gladys Ida (Dickenson) Hulbert. He graduated from Lowville Academy and Central School before proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge in 1967.
Tom dedicated 25 years of service to Eastman Kodak Company before retiring in 1998. Retirement, however, did not slow him down. He went on to spend the next 20 years as a beloved school bus driver for the Pal-Mac School District, where his kind heart, quick smile, and gentle nature left a lasting impression on the students and families he saw every day.
More than anything, Tom was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He married the love of his life, Carol J. Tabolt, on May 17, 1986. Together they built a life centered around family, laughter, and caring for others. Tom had a quiet strength about him, he was the kind of man who made people feel comfortable the moment they met him. He was gentle, endlessly kind, and had a wonderful sense of humor that could brighten even the hardest days. Whether he was teasing someone with a well-timed joke, sharing stories, or simply sitting surrounded by the people he loved, Tom found his greatest joy in being with family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his children, Darin (Liz) Virkler, Julie A. (Donny Hayes) Hulbert, Nicole (Shawn) Blakeman, and Amy Jo (Chris) Ossont; his seven grandchildren, Stephanie, Kevin, Adam, Nolan, Nathan, Adley, and Beckett; his three great-grandchildren, Dakoda, Maddi, and Mason; his brother, Gerald (Beverly) Hulbert; his sister-in-law, Helen Hulbert; members of the Tabolt family; and several nieces and nephews.
Tom was predeceased by his five sisters, Carol S. (Vernon Leon) LaFlair, Naomi J. (Robert W.) LaFlair, Sally J. (Maynard D.) Hirschey, Shirley (Francis) Dier, and Patricia M. (Larry J.) Tabolt; and his five brothers, Robert S. (Madalene R.) Hulbert, Garvis G. (Emily E.) Hulbert Sr., Charles W. (Dorothy E.) Hulbert, Ronald E. (Patricia A. “Pat”) Hulbert, and Reginald J. Hulbert.
A graveside service for family and friends will be held on Monday, May 18th, 2026 at Beaches Bridge Cemetery at 11:00 A.M., with Rev. Greg Jenkins, First Presbyterian Church, officiating, followed by military honors.
Tom loved nothing more than spending time with those he cared about, and in honoring his memory, family and friends are invited to a luncheon at Lewis County Marine Corps League #754 Farney Hall following the cemetery service.
Memorial contributions in Tom’s name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
