GLENFIELD – Richard L. ("Dick") Cole
Richard L. ("Dick") Cole, 67, of Wetmore Road, Glenfield, NY, passed away early Friday morning, November 18, 2016, surrounded by his family at his home. Dick was born August 16, 1949 in Watertown, NY, son of the late Herbert W. ("Punky") and Velma C. (Jones) Cole. Dick graduated from Carthage Central High School in 1967 and Norwich University (Northfield, VT) in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and History.
Captain of the undefeated 1966 Carthage Comet high school football team, Dick also excelled in basketball and track while in high school. He was also an All-New England tight end while at Norwich University. Dick's 1970 football team was inducted into the Norwich University Athletic Hall of Fame after Dick graduated and began his pursuit of a career in education.
Dick started his teaching career at Liverpool High School in 1971, but soon left teaching to become a landscaper for Black River Garden Center where he was a design consultant. He returned to teaching at Lowville Academy and Central School in 1976, where he taught Physical Education and Economics until his retirement in 2007. Following his retirement from teaching, Dick began a new career in the winery business, ultimately fulfilling the role of Marketing Manager at Tug Hill Vineyards.
From 1976 until 2008, Dick was the head varsity football coach at Lowville Academy and Central School, compiling a record of 174-98-4 over 31-seasons and winning Section III Class C Championships in 1986, 1988, and 1998. Dick also served as the head varsity tennis coach at LACS, and at various points, assisted with Lowville's basketball and wrestling programs. Dick was a Life Member in the Lowville Elks BPOE 1605, serving as Exalted Ruler and earning Elk of the Year.
Dick and Dale P. Crossman resided together for 16 years, getting married on July 2, 2005 at Dale's family cottage on Simcoe Island in Canada with their closest friends and family.
Dick is survived by his wife, Dale P. Cole, three sons: Barret S. Cole (Holly) of Henniker, NH, Jonathan R. Cole (Theresa) of Ilion, NY, and Seth M. Cole (Hannah) of Atlanta, GA; one daughter: Emily B. Cole of Rochester, NY; one step-son: Eric L. Crossman of Oswego, NY; and two step-daughters: Heidi P. Szalach (Jon) and Heather R. Lacey (Shane). Dick is also survived by two brothers, David W. Cole (Kristine) of Lowville, NY, and Dennis Q. Cole (Sherry) of Oswego, NY; one sister-in-law: Pamela Cole; and two former spouses: Sally L. (Hayes) Cole of Watertown, NY and Cheryl B. (Barnard) Cole of Lowville, NY; and 13 grandchildren with whom he loved spending time and following their many activities as their number one fan.
Dick was predeceased by his wife, Janice Dalton Cole in 1974; his nephew, David W. Cole, Jr. in 1985; and his brother, Donn H. Cole in 2008.
Dick enjoyed his camping, hunting, landscaping, gardening, sporting events, wine tasting, and traveling, particularly to the Bahamas. Most of all, Dick enjoyed people, especially his family.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM on Tuesday November 22, 2016 at the Sundquist Funeral Home at 7676 North State Street in Lowville, NY. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday November 23, 2016 at St. Peter's Catholic Church at 5439 Shady Avenue in Lowville, NY. A celebration of life will be held at the Lowville Elks Club at 5600 Shady Avenue in Lowville, NY immediately following the funeral mass.
