CASTORLAND - Richard C. Brown, 81, of the Deveines Road and formerly of Woodlawn Ave in Lowville, died Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center of Syracuse. Mr. Brown was born August 29, 1932, in Gouverneur, a son of the late Claude and Susan LaVancha Brown. He was a graduate of Beaver River High School in 1950 and Canton ATI with a degree in refrigeration. On October 2, 1954, he married Dorothy L. Kohler at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Croghan. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army serving in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1954, with one Bronze Service Star. Richard was a line foreman with Niagara Mohawk, retiring in 1990; after which, Richard and Dorothy became residents of West Melbourne, FL where Dorothy died on April 3, 2008. As an avid outdoorsman, Richard enjoyed hunting with his son Michael on Tug Hill and was a past member of the Blue Swamp Hunting Club. He was a member and past commander from1970-1972 of Lowville VFW Post #6912 and life member of Lowville Elks BPOE #1605 and Croghan American Legion Post #1663. He is survived by his four children, Steven L. and Michele Brown of Croghan; Michael J. and SuLin Brown of Deer River; Debra S. and Mark Dunn of Copenhagen and Randy J. Brown of Castorland; his brother, Donald Brown of Watertown; 10 Grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews and his faithful companion Bruiser. A graveside service with military burial will be in Riverside Cemetery Annex, Beaver Falls on Sunday, August 31, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, retired minister officiating. Calling hours are from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Sundquist Funeral Home prior to the burial on Sunday afternoon.
