Obituary

DENMARK - Long time dairy farmer, Peter Makuch, 84, passed away at his home on Sunday, May 10, 2015, with his family at his bedside. Peter was the 11th child out of 17, born to the late Jacob and Paiza Repak Makuch on July 7, 1930, in the Town of Montague and attended local country schools as a young boy. He enlisted in the Army 3rd Division 15th Infantry Regiment doing his basic training at Fort Dix. He then saw action during the Korea Conflict on the front lines at "Old Baldy", Pork Chop Hill and Chosin Reservoir. He was wounded twice and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and three Bronze Campaign Stars. Upon returning stateside, Peter was sent to Fort Devens for reassignment, then to Fort Jay and assigned MP duty at the prison on Governors Island. He was honorably discharged from Fort Jay in June of 1953. On September 1, 1953, Peter was married to Marie Zecher at the Deer River Congregational Church, with Rev. Howard Griswold, officiating and together they made their home at their first farm in the Town of Martinsburg on the West Road in August of 1953. In March of 1960, the couple purchased Marie's parent's farm in the town of Denmark becoming the third generation to operate the farm, until 1985 when they semi-retired until 2000. Graveside and military services are scheduled for Thursday, May 14, 2015, at 3:30 pm at the Swinburne Cemetery with Anne Rohr, niece officiating. Family and friends are invited to call at the Sundquist Funeral Home on Thursday 12:00 pm (noon) to 3:00 pm prior to the graveside services. Surviving Mr. Makuch are his wife of 61 years, Marie; their children and spouses: Maxwell (Patsy); Brenda (Mike) Snow, Emma (Neil) Birchenough, Connie (Tom) Leichtweis, Christine (Robert) Domena and Bonita Makuch and her partner Sheila Traviss; thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; and his siblings: Alice Barnum, William (Doris) Makuch, Jacob and Joseph Makuch. He was predeceased by: three grandsons, Jacob Birchenough, Michael Snow and Jacob Leichtweis; his siblings, Mary Makuch, Anna Tiff, Julia Larson, Eva Makuch, Helen Lehman, Rose Sweredoski, John Makuch, Martha Denning, Tony Makuch, Theodore Makuch, Mitchell Makuch, Kathryn Trickey.
