Obituary

LOWVILLE - Pauline Marie Johndrow, 92, passed away on Monday afternoon, July 2, 2012, at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility. Prior to entering the nursing home, Pauline had resided at Brookside Senior Living Center and on Park Avenue. Pauline was born on September 10, 1919, in Croghan, a daughter of the late Thomas and Petronella Ostroski DuFlo. After her graduation from Father Leo Memorial High School, Pauline graduated from Watertown School of Commerce. She worked for Dr. Arthur Peckham in Watertown until her marriage to A. Clarke Johndrow on August 12, 1942, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, with Rev. Amadeus Burke officiating. After their marriage, Clarke was the distributor of Shell Oil in Lowville while Pauline worked in the office. In 1952, the couple bought DuFlo's Shoe Store in Lowville, renamed the business Clarke's Shoes and together maintained it until Clarke's death in 1975. Pauline continued to own and operate the business until selling it in 1981. For many years, Pauline managed the gift shop at Lewis County General Hospital for the hospital auxiliary, while at the same time opening her home to boarding guests on a short term basis. She welcomed her guests with a smile and very much enjoyed visiting with them and sharing stories. She also loved to knit and cook. However, she was most proud of her family, especially her grandchildren and loved spending time with them. Mrs. Johndrow is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Jacqueline Johndrow of Warwick, NY; her grandson Anthony Phillip and wife Elizabeth Inghram- Johndrow of Brooklyn and Nicole Ardell Johndrow of Manhattan; her two brothers, James L. DuFlo of Lowville and Thomas (Betty) DuFlo of Soft Maple; sister, Isabel Bush also of Soft Maple and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Clarke, Pauline is predeceased by her brother Francis DuFlo. Mrs. Johndrow was a devoted member and communicant of St. Peter's Catholic Church where her funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 7, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Christopher Carrara, pastor officiating. Burial will follow at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Croghan. Family and friends may call at the Sundquist Funeral Home on Friday, July 6th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Memorials in Pauline's name may be made to the American Cancer Society.
