Obituary

LOWVILLE - Maurice Garnet Birchenough, 89, died early Tuesday, April 18, 2017 morning with family present. He was under the care of Hospice and the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility.

Mr. Birchenough was born on November 14, 1927 in the town of Pinckney, son of the late Arthur F. and Anna C. (Maher) Birchenough. Garnet graduated from Lowville Free Academy in 1945 and served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947 in the Occupation Forces of the Philippines. After his military service he worked on area farms. He worked for Payne Jones starting in 1957 and retired from Fibermark in 1989 after 32 and half years.

Maurice married Theresa F. Bush on September 30, 1950 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Bremen, with Rev. Sixtus O'Connor, officiating. The couple made their home on the Bardo road. Theresa died on January 1, 2011.

He is survived by his twelve children, Stephen and Marjorie, Turin; James and Pamela, Mexico, NY; Neil and Emma, Lowville; Mark and Linda, Castorland; Ann and Douglas Wolff, Croghan; Amy and Donald Kraeger, Lowville; Wayne and Kathy, New Bremen; Howard and Paula, Oregon, OH; Philip and Juli, Lowville; Donald and Tammi, Lowville, Colonel Helen Birchenough, Arlington, VA; and Roy and Diane, Lowville; 26 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins; a sister, Theresa Brown, Sand Pond; and several sisters and brothers-in-law.

He is predeceased by his grandson, Jacob J. Birchenough; a daughter-in-law, Karen Johnson Birchenough; his brothers, Thomas, Oswald, John, Llewellyn, Robert, Harold, Francis, Andre Birchenough; his sisters, Mary Barker, Marcella Bouboulis, Dorothy Goutermount, and infant sister Rita Birchenough.

Garnet was a communicant of St. Peter's Catholic Church, a member of the Lewis County Memorial Post #6912 V.F.W., and a member of Beaver Lake Hunting Club in Edwards. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.

Calling hours will be Thursday, April 20th from 4-7 pm at the Sundquist Funeral Home. A Mass will be said on Friday, April 21st at 10 am at St. Peter's Catholic Church, with Rev. Christopher Carrara, Pastor, officiating. A military burial will be in Lowville Rural Cemetery immediately following mass.

Memorials may be made in Maurice's name to the VFW Post #6912, Friends of Lewis County Hospice Inc, St. Peter's Catholic Church or a charity of one's own choice.
