Mary A. Lyng (1936–2026)

Mary A. Lyng, 89, formerly of Jackson Street in Lowville, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, March 27, 2026, after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on September 3, 1936, in Lowville, NY, to the late Francis E. and Dorothy F. (Kelsey) Hanno, Mary graduated from Lowville Academy and CCBI in Syracuse. She was joined in marriage to David T. Lyng on June 29, 1957, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Professionally, she served as a secretary and office manager for the law office of Cummings & Parker, McGuire & Dunckel. Upon retirement, she soon became a court attendant for the Lewis County Courthouse where she continued to serve well into her eighties.

Mary was a communicant of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, and a member of the Lewis County American Legion Memorial Post #162. She was a charter member of the Lowville Fire Department Auxiliary and was honored with a senate resolution that recognized her 60 years of service.

She is survived by three of her children: Michele (Stephen) Kibling, Amy J. Monnat, and Julie A. (Michael) Dumas; her son-in-law, Jim Hulbert; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Francis E. Hanno, Michael J. (Kristie) Hanno, Mark K. (Glendyne) Hanno, Stephen B. (Frances) Hanno, Kurt D. (Paula) Hanno, Thomas C. (Christine) Hanno, and Jane M. Ingersoll.

She was predeceased by her husband, David T. Lyng; her daughter, Reneé E. Hulbert (Jim); and her grandson, David and son-in-law, Timothy J. Monnat, her sisters-in-law, Carol Hanno (Mark) and Barbara Hanno (Frank), and her brother-in-law, Gary Ingersoll (Jane).

Mary is remembered for her smile that lit up a room, strong hugs and her fierce love for her family and friends. Mary enjoyed many years at Lake Bonaparte with her husband Dave on their pontoon boat and rousing games of dominoes. She will also be remembered for her love of music, dancing, singing to her grandbabies, and fondness for Genny Light. Her laugh was infectious and will be greatly missed.

A funeral Mass will be said on Friday, April 10th at 11:00am at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, with Rev. Sony G. Pulickal, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Martinsburg Cemetery.

Mary lived life to the fullest, always found a reason to laugh and smile, impacting countless lives through her warmth and energy. In honor of her wishes, there will be no calling hours, however there will be a celebration of life at the Lowville Firehall to follow immediately after services; all are welcome. Any food donations may be taken directly to the Lowville Firehall after 9:00 a.m. on Friday, April 10th.
