Obituary

Lowville - Mary S. Houppert (Sue), 77, died early Tuesday morning at Samaritan Medical Center with her family and best friend by her side. She had been a patient since September 4th. Sue was born in Lowville on May 8, 1937 to the late John Robert and Alice Marion Clark Moran. She was their only child and was truly cherished by them. She graduated from Lowville Central Academy and went on to work for the DuFlo Insurance Agency. On June 16, 1956 she was united in marriage to Stanley C. Houppert at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Lowville. They made their home in Deer River where they owned and operated a large dairy farm until 1992. Stanley died in June, 1993. Throughout the years, Sue held many jobs, but first and foremost, she was a terrific mother to her five children. She was a proud mom and proclaimed that to be her finest accomplishment. She played a large role in raising three of her grandsons, who along with their mother, resided with her most of their lives. She was a mentor and role model and often took in her children's friends as if they were her own. She was a sales representative for Avon and Dutch Made; she worked on the Lewis County Board of Elections; she managed the kitchenette at the Northern New York Farmers' Marketing Co-Op, a Livestock Auction Market; she worked at Mr. Sub in Lowville; she began working as a personal care aide for US Care before becoming a private care giver to elderly clients in the Lowville area. She only recently retired from that, her most beloved job next to raising her family. Sue was known for giving her all at everything she did in life. Her motto was, "anything worth doing was worth doing right!" Sue led a very active life. She enjoyed nothing more than being surrounded by family and friends and she never met a stranger. Her early married life saw her doing such things as going on snowmobile excursions with her husband, taking various day and weekend trips, to planning and hosting large parties. She never missed one of her children's ball games, wrestling matches or dance recitals. She loved working on handcrafts and spent hours knitting. Sue was a splendid cook and savored time in the kitchen making baked goods for family and friends, especially at Christmas time. She had a generous heart and would often visit shut-ins delivering gift boxes of her homemade goods to help lift their spirits. She shipped care packages to the deployed troops and donated items to children in need. She left a deep and lasting impression on all who knew her. Sue enjoyed gardening, reading, camping, bon fires, attending garage sales, antiquing, auction hunting, traveling and "ramming" in general. For the last 13 years, Sue had become a snow bird wintering in North Myrtle Beach, SC with her best friend, Loretta Zehr. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. In her quiet moments, she could often be found in her favorite recliner with her elderly teacup poodle, Sugar, snuggled on her lap. Sue had a deep faith and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Lowville. Surviving are her five children, John & Darlene Houppert of Deer River; Joseph Houppert of Palermo; Kristine Houppert of Lowville; Kelly and Michael Todd of Carthage; and James Houppert of Tarpon Springs, FL; her seven grandchildren and one great-grandson, Jon and Meisha Houppert, Tobias Houppert, Dustin Houppert, and Bethany Houppert and her son, Jackson; Joshua, Caleb and Micah Houppert. She is predeceased by two infant grandchildren, Cala Sue and Kolby James. Calling hours for family and friends will be on Thursday, October 16, 2014 from 5 to 8:00 P.M. at the Sundquist Funeral Home, Lowville. Funeral Services will be on Friday, October 17th at 4:00 P.M. at Trinity Episcopal Church with Rev. Ed Murphy, Rector, officiating. Burial will be in Lowville Rural Cemetery. Memorials in Sue's name may be made to: Trinity Episcopal Church.
