LOWVILLE - Laura M. Monnat, 58, of Waters Terrace, died Saturday morning, July 11, 2015, at home with her husband at her side after a brave struggle with cancer. Laurie was born on February 20, 1957, in Watertown, NY, the daughter of the late John P. and Jean (Woolschleager) McGrath. She was a graduate of Lowville Academy, Class of 1975, continued her studies at Canton ATC, and graduated from Potsdam with a Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education. Laurie started her career teaching at a preschool in Watertown and then transitioned to providing day care privately in Lowville. She also taught at St. Peter's Catholic School and was a teacher's aide at Lowville Academy. She married Joseph A. Monnat in Lowville on June 26, 1982, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, with Rev. Driscoll officiating. Laurie was a lifelong communicant of St. Peter's Catholic Church. She loved antiquing, quilting, baking, and her German Shepherd (Skipper), and she was known as the family historian. Above all else, Laurie's passion was her family, and she always put the interests of others before her own. She is survived by her husband, Joe, and her son and daughter, LTJG David J. Monnat of Norfolk, VA, a naval flight officer, and Jacqueline J. Monnat of New York, NY, a kindergarten teacher; her three sisters, Anne M. McManus and Cathleen J. McGrath of Silver Spring, MD, and Susan M. McGrath of Nashua, NH; her aunt, Jean Reed, of Lowville; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, and numerous cousins. A funeral mass will be said at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, July 15th, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, with Rev. Christopher Carrara, pastor, officiating. Burial will be immediately following in Lowville Rural Cemetery. Family and friends may call on Tuesday, July 14th, at the Sundquist Funeral Home from 5 to 8 P.M.
