Obituary

BEAVER FALLS - Katherine R. "Kathy" Gillen, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away unexpectedly on January 28, 2013, at home.

She was born December 1, 1952, in Lowville to the late Leo and Rose Smith Hellinger. She graduated from Lowville Academy and Central School and obtained an Associates Degree from Cobleskill. She worked at Climax Manufacturing in Castorland until she took a few years off to raise her children. She returned to work full-time at Beaverite for 15 years. She then became employed with CAPC in Watertown, NY and then at Watertown Eye Center. She married Douglas A. Gillen on June 15, 1974.

She is survived by her loving husband and two children; her daughter and son-in-law, Jessica A. and Eric Moulton and their two children Evan and Ava of Greenfield, MA. A son, Jeffrey A. Gillen and his companion, Elissa J. Spaulding and their children, Bella and Talon of Castleton, NY. She is also survived by sisters: Luann Merry of Lowville and Carol Comins of Lowville; brothers, William and James Hellinger both of Lowville as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by sisters, Donna Tuttle and Linda Davis; brothers, Pete, Hank, Randy and Leo Hellinger, Jr.

She enjoyed spending time at various casinos, bowling, reading, crossword puzzles and spending time with friends and family. She was proud being a United Way volunteer. She was the recipient of the Woman of Distinction Award in 2004 from the Thousand Islands Girl Scout Council for her many years of dedication. She was also the recipient of the United Way of Northern New York, Inc. Community Spirit Award in 2003.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sundquist Funeral Home with retired Minister Rev. Bruce W. Chapman officiating. Spring burial will be in Beaches Bridge Cemetery. Calling hours for family and friends are on Thursday evening from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in Kathy's name can be directed to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309.
