Obituary

DEVON, PA - Joseph Arthur Russum died on April 4, 2014 in Devon. He was a 30 year veteran of service with Atlantic Richfield Company whose varied background included a law degree and an outstanding record as a combat infantryman during World War II. Joseph was the son of Joseph M. Russum and Helen B. Russum and was born July 30, 1917 in Albany. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Union College, Schenectady. He entered the army in 1941 as a private and rose to the rank of major, serving as Operations Officer with the 26th Infantry Division in combat in Europe. He won the Bronze Star, Combat Infantrymen's Badge and Croix de Guerre with clusters. He was later promoted to Lt. Colonel. After the war, Mr. Russum returned to Cornell University Law School, where he had finished his first year prior to the war and he earned his L.L.B. Degree. Although Mr. Russum never practiced law, he found his legal background helpful in a new career. He started with Atlantic Refining Company (now Atlantic Richfield Company). Starting in 1948 he held marketing posts of increasing responsibility through the years. He was named Operations Group Manager of the former Philadelphia New Jersey Region in 1954, and four years later became the Manager of Marketing operations of the company. Active in the affairs of the American Petroleum Institute, he was Chairman of the Marketing Operations and Engineering Committee. He was an avid skier, both on water and snow, and he enjoyed the game of tennis. He is survived by his three daughters, Martha Russum, Nancy R. Hecht and Jane Kallay and five grandchildren. Mr. Russum was a member of the Wayne Presbyterian Church in Wayne, Pennsylvania.
