LOWVILLE - Jean Frances Reed, 95, of Brookside Circle passed away on May 20, 2018 at home. She was born on August 23, 1922 in Vernon NY daughter of Joseph and Anna McGovern McGrath. Her family moved to their home on Jackson Street in 1924 where her father was employed as a custodian and only bus driver of the newly opened Lowville Academy.
Jean was married to Gerald R. Reed on May 20, 1944 at Xavier University with Rev. Owen J. English officiating. Gerald was stationed there with the Air Force. After his discharge they moved to their farm in Glenfield, NY. During that time, Jean was a registered nurse at the Lewis County General Hospital and was a former member of the Lewis County Nurse's Association and A. Barton Hepburn Alumni Association. She also served on the Lewis County Dairy Princess Committee, was a past member of Home Bureau and a past member of the The Lewis County Historical Society.
She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Glenfield where she was a greeter and lector. Jean was also a member of the Women's Guild. Gerald passed away on July 16, 2013. They were married for 69 years. The couple was involved in many community organizations and activities but they considered their family as their greatest joy and accomplishment.
Jean is survived by her six children, Carol Reed, Greensboro, NC, David (Judith) of Fishkill NY, Jane (Timothy) O'Connor, Lowville, Sue Ellen (Tom) Machuga, Parish, Gerald Jr. (Susanne) of Leesburg, FL. and Mary (Tony) Passannante, Chapel Hill, NC.
She is a beloved "Nana" to her eleven grandchildren Michael Higby and Christine Wilson, Timothy and Phillip O'Connor, Holly Fehr and Kelly Virkler, Graig and Megan Reed, Elizabeth, Charles, and Anna Passannante. And a treasured "Super Nana" to her nine great grandchildren Claire and Sadie Wilson, Ian O'Connor, Amelie, Reed and Natalie Fehr, and Jenna and Grant Reed.
Her family cherishes the time they were able to spend with her at the celebration of her granddaughter Megan's wedding on April 28, 2018.
Jean is predeceased by her parents, one brother John McGrath, and her three sisters Katherine Miller, Evelyn Nortz and Mary LaDuc.
Per Mrs. Reed's wishes, there will be no calling hours. A funeral mass will be said on Monday, June 25th at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Glenfield with burial following in Old Glendale Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Lowville Free Library or The Glenfield Cemetery Association in care of Darlene Burdick 4753 Rt. 12, Glenfield , NY 13343 or a charity of one's choice.
