Obituary

LOWVILLE – George Alfred Hadlow, Jr., 101, died peacefully at his home the morning of Tuesday, December 18, 2018 surrounded by loving family and his exceptional caregivers, affectionately known as "Team Hadlow".

Mr. Hadlow was born November 27, 1917 in Oswego, NY. The son of the late George Alfred Hadlow, Sr. and Grace Beatrice (Wiles) Hadlow. His parents arrived in the United States on their honey moon from Kent, England. They decided to stay and settled in Oswego, NY where they raised their family. George, Jr. had many wonderful stories to tell of his childhood growing up there with his brother and sister. Living near to Lake Ontario, he developed a passion for sailing. As a teen he built a small sailboat, the Chick, with one of his friends and they enjoyed adventures on the lake together.

Instead of entering college, he was drafted into the US Army in 1942. Before starting his training, he was allowed time to marry his fiancée, Jane Baer, as they had planned, on June 20, 1942 in Oswego, NY. His bride accompanied him while he completed his basic training and then officer training for the Armored Force at the bases of Ft. Niagara, Fort Knox, Camp Polk, Fort Ord and Fort Lewis. He shipped out from Seattle, WA in June, 1944 destined for the Asiatic Pacific. He was a tank unit commander involved in the campaign in the Southern Philippines. When he completed his service, in May, 1946, he was awarded the American Theater Service Medal, Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and Philippines Liberation Medal with two stars.

He and Jane settled in Oswego after the war and started their family. They enjoyed camping with their five children and traveling. Over the years, they moved to California and then back to NY living in Rochester, then Baldwinsville and finally in Lowville, where George was employed with Beaverite. Later he worked as maintenance supervisor at Lewis County General Hospital.

The love of sailing and being on the open water never left him. He and his wife, Jane, spent many years sailing on the St Lawrence and Ontario Lake together. They also enjoyed being involved as members of the First Presbyterian Church of Lowville both as choir members and Sunday school teachers. George was also an active member of the Kiwanis along with his son, David, Boy Scouts of America and the Tug Hill Commission.

Surviving him are his four daughters; Susanne (Roman) Hrycun of Rhinebeck, NY; Ellen Goodrich of Naperville, IL; Frances (Richard) Collins of Williamsburg, VA and Janis Hadlow of Cameron, NC; 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his wife, Jane (Baer) Hadlow; son, David William Hadlow; brother, Elmer Hadlow; and sister, Doris Hadlow Phillips.

George was well known by many. Always there with a smile and a helping hand. Most often he carried a tin of his favorite homemade (by him) cookies of oatmeal raisin, which he gladly shared.  A tradition he continued for quite some time.

A memorial service with be held at a later date at the discretion of the family. At that time they will honor both George and Jane. Any donations may be sent to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation in memory of David Hadlow or to Lewis County Hospice.
