Obituary

MARTINSBURG - The funeral service for Evelyn Bernice Overton will be on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the Martinsburg United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Martinsburg Cemetery with military honors. Calling hours will be on Friday, May 20th from 6 to 8:00 P.M. at the Sundquist Funeral Home.

Evelyn Bernice Overton, 91, formerly of Chaumont, died early Wednesday morning, February 10, 2016 at Samaritan Summit Village of Watertown. Evelyn also resided at Lowville Heights for many years.
She was born on August 23, 1924 in Martinsburg the daughter of the late Hiram and Emily (Levely) Doud. Evelyn graduated from Lowville Free Academy and in 1944 and she enlisted in the U.S. Army, into the Women's Army Corps serving in the 1473rd SCU at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. While in the WAC, she was a truck driver and mechanic. She was honorably discharged in 1946 as a sergeant with WW II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
On May 20, 1949 in Copenhagen, she married Francis R. "Zip" Overton. The couple made there home in Martinsburg where she was the Post Master of the Martinsburg Post Office retiring in 1990. She was member of the Martinsburg Free Library, Martinsburg Fire Department Auxiliary, and active member in the Martinsburg United Methodist Church. Mr. Overton died on December 22, 1994.
Evelyn is survived by her three children, Duane Overton and his family, Cord, and Josie; Beth and Dale Hopkins and their family, Forrest, Lucas, Wesley and daughter-in-law Erin; Yvonne and Kenneth Widrick and their family, Rory and his fiancé Shannon; five great grandchildren, Kaylee, Raylan, Davis, Finley and Evelyn; two sisters, Dawn Manzer and Beverly Evans; several nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her two brothers, Merwin and Niles Doud.
Evelyn loved spending time with her family, her friends and her neighbors. She enjoyed knitting, quilting, ceramics, puzzles and gardening.
