LOWVILLE - Eugene J. Hutt, 79, of State Rte. 26 and husband of Catherine Swiernik, passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2015, at Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility with his family by his side. Born July 27, 1936, in West Carthage, son of the late Eugene and Gladys Reynolds Hutt, he grew up in the Lyons Falls area and graduated from Lyons Falls High School. On August 8, 1977, he was married to Catherine J. Swiernik with Charles Turbyfill officiating. He worked at Gould Paper Company in Lyons Falls, Lowville Farmers Co-op and retired from Payne-Jones, which is now Fiber Mark in 1998 after 33 years of service. In his earlier years, he was a director for Lewis County Opportunities and helped in getting the "meals on wheels" program in Lewis County. Eugene was very active with the Democratic Party, serving as state committee person representing the people of Lewis County for 35 years. He received a letter from Senator Patrick Moynihan honoring him for his years of public service. He was a long-time member of the Turin Highland Golf Course, former member of Lowville Fish and Game Club and Lowville Lions Club. He bowled on local teams, was a member of the band "The Village" which played at Village Tavern in Glenfield. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, reading, woodworking, painting and talking with people - always had a story to tell. He especially loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. Growing up Eugene was an altar boy at St. John's Catholic Church in Lyons Falls and at the time of his death was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Lowville. Survivors include his wife Catherine; two sons Kevin (Rebecca) of Adams and Brian (Amber) of Carthage; daughter Julie (Dennis) Whalen of New Brighton, PA; son-in-law Alan Thomas of Atlantic, PA; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Neil "Roger" Hutt and his companion, Rose LaChausse of Croghan, Marge Olley of New Bremen, Gary (Patty) Hutt of Warren, OH; four brothers-in-law and their wives, Edward (Eva Mae) Swiernik of Turin, Alex (Cindy) Swiernik of Martinsburg, Benjamin (Patricia) Swiernik of Boonville and Joseph (Lisa) Swiernik of Port Leyden; sisters-in-law Stella LaParne of East Syracuse and Anna (James) Forbes of LaFargeville and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Eugene was predeceased by his father and mother-in-law, Alex Sr. and Helen Swiernik; a daughter Michele Thomas, his brother, Dean Edward, three brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law, Richard Olley, Alfred Swiernik, Gary and Edna (Swiernik) Lohr and a niece Tammy Hanno. Family and friends may call on Thursday the 17th from 4-7 P.M. at the Sundquist Funeral Home. A funeral service will be on Friday, September 18, 2015, at 11:00 A.M. at the Sundquist Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald Pominville, Deacon officiating. Burial will follow in the Lowville Rural Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Marine Corps League. Any food donations may be brought on Thursday afternoon or Friday morning after 10:00 A.M. Memorial donations can be made to Lewis County Search & Rescue or to a charity of one's choice. The family would like to thank the 3rd Floor nursing staff for the compassionate care given to Eugene during his stay at the nursing home.
