Obituary

NEW HARTFORD - Ellen V. Wetmore Spencer, 89, died Sunday evening, February 25, 2018 at the Presbyterian Home.

Mrs. Spencer was born on October 20, 1928 at birthing home Idle Ease in Croghan, the daughter of the late Roscoe F. and Ruth J. Wetmore.  Ellen graduated from Lowville Free Academy and the last class of St. Lukes Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1949. She was a registered nurse at St. Lukes Hospital for many years. Ellen was the last living member of St. Lukes Hospital School of Nursing.

She first was married to Richard Scalzo and then Ellen married Ira Spencer in 1996. She was of the Methodist faith, and she loved swimming and bringing her family to Crystal Lake , Chase Lake , and Sand Pond.

She is survived by her daughter, Bethany (Paul) DeSimone of Sangerfield; her son, Bradley (Michelle) Scalzo of Lowville; her grandchildren, Aaron (Chris), Andrew, Peter, Nicholas (Abigail), Michelle, Emily, and Dehana; great granddaughter, Evelyn; her sister-in-law, Marilyn (Bruce) Chapman; her nieces, Cheryl, Brenda, and Cynthia and families.

Ellen is predeceased by her husband Ira, and her brother, Karleton Wetmore.

A memorial service for Ellen V. Wetmore Spencer will be on Saturday, May 12th at 11:00 A.M. at the Sundquist Funeral Home with Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, retired minister officiating. A calling hour will be from 10:00 A.M. to the time of the service.

Ellen donated her body to the Anatomical Gift Program,
SUNY Upstate Medical University , Syracuse .
