LOWVILLE – Donald Frederick Virkler, 87, died on Sunday afternoon at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility where he has resided since 2016.
Donald was born
April 26, 1930
in Castorland, the son of the late Carl and Corinne Yoder Virkler. He was educated in Castorland and Lowville schools and graduated from Lowville in 1947. He graduated from
Rider
University
,
Trenton
,
NJ
in 1951 and served in the U.S. Navy from July, 1951 until July, 1955. He worked for one year for the Asbestos Casket Company, Lowville, and for Payne Jones, Inc. from 1956-1961. He graduated from Simmons School of Mortuary Science in
Syracuse
in 1962 and worked for the Virkler Funeral Home in Lowville until 1977 when he and his wife, Sylvia, opened the Donald F. Virkler Funeral Home in Lowville. They continued the business until selling it in 1988.
Mr. Virkler married Sylvia Schaab on
July 17, 1954
in the
Lowville
Baptist
Church
. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Lowville, where he has served as a Deacon, Elder, and Trustee. He was also a member of the Lewis County Historical Society, the Constable Hall Association, Lowville American Legion Post #169, Lewis County Memorial Post #6912, V.F.W., past master and member of the Lowville Masonic Lodge #134 F. & A.M., where he was treasurer for 25 years. He also was a member of Lowville Lodge #1605 B.P.O.E.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia, a son and his wife, Eric J. Virkler and Heidi VanZandt, a daughter and her husband, Alisa Grinnals and the Rev. Michael Grinnals, two grandsons, Scott and Jonathan (Lorraine) Yousey, two brothers, Ralph and Berry Virkler and a sister, Jane Dilworth, nieces and nephews.

at the Sundquist Funeral Home with a service following with Pastor Laurie Sponaugle, First Presbyterian Church and son-in-law, Rev. Michael Grinnals officiating.
