Donald Bronson Burgy, 90, passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon, February 18, 2026, at his home on Park Avenue.

Born October 24, 1935, in Lowville, he was the son of the late Elmer Jr. and Helen (Wakefield) Burgy. He attended school in Turin. Don began his working career at Lowville Veneer before accepting a position with the Lowville Department of Public Works. During his many years there, he served as an equipment operator and later retired as supervisor road foreman.

Donald proudly served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1958 and was honorably discharged. On June 6, 1958, he married the late Hazel E. Donnelly.

He was a past member of the Lowville Fire Department and a driver for the Firematic race team. Don enjoyed watching NASCAR and could often be found on Saturdays at Adirondack Race Track. He also volunteered alongside his good friend, Francis Lee, at the 4-H horse barn at the Lewis County Fairgrounds prior and during fair week.

Donald is survived by his three sons, Bruce M. Burgy (Donna Jones), Brian S. Burgy (Tina Murray), and Derek B. (Chris) Burgy; his grandchildren, Angelina, Ben, Ashley, and Brandon; his companion of 50 years, Shelia Ortlieb; her children, Sandy (Jack) Platt, Julie (Alan) Barniak, and Alan (Tammy) Ortlieb, along with their families; and his sister, Patricia A. (Benjamin) Swiernik.

In addition to his parents, Donald was predeceased by his son, Mitchell W. Burgy; his grandson, Kyle E. Burgy; Pat Hamlin; and Richard Ortlieb.

The Burgy family would like to thank Lewis County Search and Rescue, Lowville Village Police for their quick response and efforts that day and Sundquist F.H. for their assistance and help in these hard times.
