David Karl Smithling, A funeral service will be held at the Croghan Mennonite Church on Friday July 11th at 12:30pm. Calling hours will be prior to funeral from 10am until 12 pm.
Burial will follow in Lowville Rural Cemetery followed by a meal for friends and family at the New Bremen Fire Hall. Food donations can be delivered any time after 10am on Thursday July 10th at the fire hall or calling Cathy at 315-771-0485 for other arrangements.
David Karl Smithling, 81, of Cameron, NC, and formerly of Lowville and Croghan, died on Friday afternoon, May 30, 2025.
David was born on October 24, 1943 in Herkimer the son of the late Karl David and Laura (Rice) Smithling. He moved to Lowville at a young age in 1943. David was a graduate of Lowville Academy and Central School. He worked for Leonard Hoch at AAMCO Transmissions in Utica, and retired from Nortz & Virkler, Inc., where he was a mechanic and service manager. He married Kay M. Zehr on October 14, 1963 at Halifax, NC. The couple made their home in Lowville. Kay passed away on January 13, 2022.
Surviving are his children, Cathy L. (Peter) Martin of Lowville, Karl D. Smithling; Jeanette A. (Peter) Turner; Daryl E. (Shanny) Smithling; all of North Carolina, and Rhonda S. Noftsier of Lowville; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
David is predeceased by his sister, Martha Gokey, and his son-in-law, Romeyn A. Noftsier.
David was a member of Lowville Fire Department, and a life member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Lowville Lodge #134. David also was a volunteer driver for the Volunteer Transportation Center prior to his move to North Carolina. He loved hunting with Loren Rowsam and Matt Nortz at Loren's hunting camp.
