Obituary

NORTH WESTERN - Clayton G. Bailey, 88, died Saturday evening, February 2, 2019 at Rome Memorial Hospital .

Mr. Bailey was born on January 21, 1931 in the town of Greig the son of the late George W. and Grace M. (Sullivan) Bailey. Clayton attended Lowville Schools and entered the U.S. Army in 1951 serving in Germany . He was honorably discharged in 1953 at the rank of Corporal.

He married Bertha Anne Beach on September 18, 1954 at Holy Rosary Church NYC. Clayton and Anne traveled to Bear Mountain on a short wedding trip and settled in Lowville until September of 1959, after which they moved their family to North Western. Anne died on April 8, 2014 .

Clayton was employed by Griffiss Air Force Base working at the 485th EIG Unit retiring in 1989 after 30 years of service.

He was a charter member of Westernville American Legion Post # 1846 where he served as Past Commander. Clayton loved gardening and enjoyed having a large garden every year.

He is survived by his four children, Karen Thomas of Rome; Francis J. (June Nodecker) Bailey of Lee; Candy (George) Hammon of Rome; Lisle (Joyce Manipole) Bailey of Grant; twelve grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren; his brother, Vernon E. (Cheryl) Bailey of Glenfield; his sister-in-law, Barbara Marek of North Western; his brothers-in-law, Blair Buell of Lowville and Lisle Beach of Delaware; several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his, great granddaughter, Elektra Rose; brothers, Wayne, Bernard F. (Bud), and Clifford J. Bailey; his sisters, Beatrice B. Fahey, Clara G. Blair, Beverly J. Hotchkiss, Joyce M. Turck, Joan S. Buell,  Josephine L. Gingerich, and Geraldine C. Levesque.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at the Sundquist Funeral Home, Lowville, with Pastor Gene Bailey, nephew officiating. Following the service family and friends are invited to the Westernville American Legion for a luncheon. A military burial for Clayton G. Bailey will be on Saturday, April 27 th at 10:00 A.M at Beaches Bridge Cemetery with Gene Bailey officiating.

Calling hours for family and friends will be on Wednesday, February 6th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
