Portland, ME, Clara Mae Houck, 92, formerly of Martinsburg, New York died Tuesday evening, April 19, 2011 at Maine Medical Center in Portland Maine. She was born June 15, 1918 in Montague, New York, daughter of Clarence and V. Marie Waggoner Williams. Her early education was at a schoolhouse near her home. To obtain her high school education, she boarded with and worked for the Virkler family in Lowville. She fondly remembered taking care of Lawson Virkler as a baby. She graduated from Lowville Academy in 1937. She then worked on the Edward Sheldon farm, in Martinsburg, where she met Edward Houck. They were married on October 24, 1938 at the parsonage of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Watertown, New York. Mr. Houck died on October 15, 1991. Surviving are her four sons, William E. and his wife Shirley of Charlotte, North Carolina, Richard C. and his wife Marilyn of Nelson, New Hampshire, Floyd A. and his wife Patricia of Highmarket, New York; twin daughters, Bernice M. Sommers and husband Dwight of Bowdoin Center, Maine and Ruth M. Dick and husband Milton of Greeley, Colorado; 15 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; a sister, Eleanor Longway of Newport, New York, and several nieces and nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by a grandson, Gregg Houck in 1966 and 3 brothers, Gordon in 1945 in the South Pacific, Harvey in 1955 after serving in the Korean War, and Russell on Feb 14, 2004. Mrs. Houck was a devoted wife and mother. She raised large vegetable and flower gardens. She enjoyed traveling with her family, visiting such places as Mesa Verde NP, Washington, D. C. and hiking in the Grand Canyon. She also enjoyed reading, playing dominoes and watching 3ABN Mrs. Houck was baptized into the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Watertown New York on May 26, 1951. She served in several offices in the church, including over 40 years as Treasurer of the Turin SDA Church. She sold eggs, collected used newspapers and magazines and sold vegetables from her garden to raise money for the church's investment fund to help spread the gospel. She also was a Literature Evangelist, selling Life and Health magazines. Yearly Mrs. Houck solicited funds for the annual church Ingathering program which provided funds for the poor and needy. While living in Maine, she attended the Brunswick SDA Church when able. Mrs. Houck will be laid to rest in Martinsburg Cemetery where she will sleep until she is awakened by the Lord at His second coming. 1 Thess: 4:16&17.
