Obituary

LOWVILLE – Charles T. Gotham, 95, passed away on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility.

Born October 26, 1922, in Potsdam, a son of the late Charles M. and Marjorie Place Gotham, Charles attended school in Canton as a young boy until 1934, when he and his family moved to Elmira, where he graduated from Southside High School in 1941.

In 1943, Charles joined the service and did his basic training in Biloxi, MS, where he volunteered to join the United States Army Air Corp as an Air Gunner.  After a year of training, he was sent overseas and flew 35 missions over Europe in a B-24 while stationed in North Pickenham. In 2007, he and his nephew, John Longwell, traveled back to that airstrip and countryside.  Because of his volunteer status into the Army air Corp, Charles was given the rank of Staff Sergeant.  Charles was awarded the Air Medal and DFC, Distinguished Flying Cross for his tour of duty.  Charles was a member of the American Legion.

Upon returning to the States in 1945, Charles married Norma Emily Hollenbeck on September 15, 1945, at the Park Congregational Church in Elmira.  He then took advantage of the GI Bill and graduated cum laude from Niagara University in 1950, with a B.B.A. degree.  He worked for GLF in Ithaca before joining the staff at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton in 1958, and retired as VP in 1980.  In their retirement, Charles and Norma enjoyed winters in Venice and Zephyrhills, FL and summers in Canton, PA.  Norma died in October of 1999. He married Anne Waite in 2004, she died in 2006.

Charles moved into Brookside Senior Living Center in October of 2007, where he continued researching genealogy on the computer and visiting relatives and friends on the East Coast, especially his pilot during the war.

Charles is survived by; seven nephews: John Longwell, Randy, Greg, Gary, David and Dana Gotham, Tom Halm; three nieces, Donna O'Connor, Rorie Lynn Gotham and Maralys Swart; several grand nephews and nieces.

His brothers, Ivan K. Gotham and Andrew J. Gotham, and a sister, Dorothy M. Longwell died before him.

Per Charles' request, his body will be cremated and there will be no calling hours or funeral service.  Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira.
