Obituary

Carlton K. Carpenter, formerly of Lowville, NY, died peacefully on January 4th in Waynesville, NC, where he had been living near family for the past year.

Born in Odessa, NY in 1941, Carl was a natural athlete, with talent across sports, perhaps best known for his pitching, speed around the bases, and home run records. He graduated from Odessa-Montour High School and followed his father into the lumber business, first at Cotton-Hanlon before moving to Lowville and starting his 50-year career as a Purchasing Agent at AMF, the bowling pin and alley manufacturer. Beloved by colleagues and dedicated to "checking the kilns" regardless of winds and snow, Carpy kept the factory running and developed a network of friends at lumber mills throughout the northeast and beyond as a proud member of the National Hardwood Lumber Association.

Outside of work, Carl was dedicated to his local community. A spirited presence in bowling and softball leagues, and an eager outdoorsman every hunting season, he also rallied neighborhood kids for games throughout the seasons, coached Little League, volunteered at Lewis County Search and Rescue and Lewis County Hospice, served on the board of Lewis County General Hospital, and was on the Board of Legislators for Lewis County. A lifetime member of Lowville Elks Lodge #1605, he was also a member of Myrtle-Jefferson Mason Lodge #0131 in Montour Falls, NY.

Carl was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Meta, his brother-in-law Jack Haughey, and survived by his loving sister, Patricia Haughey. He was previously married to Patricia Parker of Waynesville, NC, and leaves two children Brian (John Gordon) Carpenter of St. Louis, MO, and Carol (Jay) Clarke of Lake Junaluska, NC, two grandchildren, Emma and Sarah Clarke, and five nieces, Cheri, Peggy, Beth, Amy, and Michelle. Carpy had many friends in Lewis County and cherished his friendship with Sara DeCarlo and the DeCarlo family.

The family would also like to thank the staff at Autumn Care of Waynesville, Four Seasons Hospice, and his friends at Brookside. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Lewis County Search and Rescue, P.O. Box 247, West State Street, Lowville, NY 13367 or Friends of Lewis County Hospice, P.O. Box 266, Lowville, NY 13367

Calling hours will be held at Sundquist Funeral Home in Lowville from 12:00-2:00pm on Saturday, January 20th. A tribute service will be conducted by the Elks at 2:00pm .
