SPERRYVILLE – A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at the Sperryville Cemetery for Charles "Bruce" Carter on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Ed Murphy, of Trinity Episcopal Church officiating.

SPERRYVILLE – Charles Bruce Carter, artist and teacher, died on April 12, 2016 , at Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility after a long illness.

Mr. Carter, generally known as Bruce, was a professor of fine arts at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh from 1963 until 1993.

He was born on May 15, 1930 , in North Adams , Mass. , the son of the late Charles W. and Harriett C. Carter; attended Palmyra Classical High School in Palmyra , N.Y. ; graduated from Albright Art School and the State University of New York in Buffalo ; and completed his graduate degrees at the Pennsylvania State University in University Park .

A Korean War veteran, Bruce fought in the Iron Triangle sector with the 15th Field Artillery Battalion, Second Infantry Division.   During his service, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal w/1 Bronze Star, Presidential Unit Citation, and United Nations Service Medal. He was a life member of the Second "Indianhead" Division, the Disabled American Veterans, the Korean War Veterans Association of Western Pennsylvania, Inc., Second Infantry Division Korean War Veterans Alliance, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6912.

He married Beatrice Crookston in 1954; their marriage ended in divorce. Bruce married Beverly G. Hetherley in 1991. She died in 2011.

A printmaker and muralist, Bruce was a member of the Artists Equity, The Boston Printmakers, the International Society of Wood Cutters and Wood Engravers, and the Los Angeles Print Society. He executed murals in the National Museum, Gettysburg, Penn.; the city halls of Narvik, Norway, and Kiruna, Sweden; the New East Side Elementary School, Gouverneur, N.Y.; and Nordlandsbanken Leknes, Lofoten, Norway.

Bruce was a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and was awarded the Dr. Janusz Korczak International Memorial Medal in Warsaw , Poland . His prints were awarded the Purchase Prize Award in the 2nd Triennial International Exhibition of Contemporary Xylography, Carpi , Italy . His woodcuts and drawings were displayed in sixty-eight solo exhibitions and seventy-five juried, national, and international exhibitions. Bruce's work is represented in thirty-five public collections in seven countries and in numerous private collections.

Bruce is survived by his brother, Paul D. Carter of Ridgewood , N.J. ; two sons, Eric J. Carter of Green Valley Lake , Calif. , and Bernard O. Carter of Pittsburgh ; a daughter, Kari E. Carter, also of Pittsburgh ; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Donald S. Carter, predeceased him.
