LOWVILLE - Bernard W. Paulsen, 91, passed away May 13, 2012, at his home under the care of his family and Hospice following a year long battle with lung cancer. Born April 21, 1921, in Holcombe, Wisconsin, he was the twelfth child of Anton and Anna Paulsen. Bernard was educated at Holcombe High School and the University of Wisconsin before entering the U.S. Army Signal Corps in 1943 and served on Guam attached to the 20th Air Force in 1944-45. He was employed by Kraft Foods for 45 years holding several positions as Plant manager in the mid west, Storage manager in Lowville from 1947 to 1970 and from 1971 until his retirement in 1986 he was Production Manager for bulk cheddar cheese for the Northeast Division. Bernard was instrumental in bringing Kraft Foods Cream cheese factory to Lowville in 1970. He married Marcella "Sally" Lynne on April 21, 1943, and they recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. Bernard is survived by his wife Sally and two sons and their wives, Kenneth W. Paulsen (Flora Li), Seattle, WA and David J. Paulsen (Emily) Carthage, NY and a brother Ernest H. Paulsen (age103). Bernard was active in his community and profession throughout his career serving as President of the NYS Cheese Association for four years and a member of the St. Lawrence National Bank Board of Directors and Community Services Board. He was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lowville, serving in a number of offices and a fifty-year member of the Lowville Masonic Lodge. Bernard was an avid golfer and gardener enjoying both throughout his retirement which he and Sally enjoyed in Lowville and at their adopted winter home in Lake Placid, FL. They also traveled extensively and particularly enjoyed cruises to Northern Europe and Alaska. Mr. Paulsen's memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Lowville with Rev. Herbert Swanson, pastor officiating.
