Bernard “Bernie” Daley, age 80, died at WYNN Hospital in the early morning hours of March 6. He had been battling multiple health issues for several months.

Bernie was the youngest of five children born to Donald Eddison and Thelma MacArthur Daley of Dolgeville, NY. As a young man, Bernie played and coached several sports. He was the first Dolgeville athlete to win ten varsity letters during his high school years. His athletic achievements were celebrated in 2007 when he was inducted into the Dolgeville Football Hall of Fame. He attended Syracuse University on a football scholarship, but his time was cut short due to a bilateral retina detachment during his freshman year.

He completed a BS in Business Administration and went on to earn a MS/CAS in Guidance and Personnel Services. While teaching at Lowville Academy, he served as assistant coach for JV football and head coach for JV basketball. Years later, he coached Little League and modified baseball. He eventually left teaching to become a sale representative for Zep Manufacturing Company. He began working for Zep in 1974 and retired in 2017.

In 1972, Bernie married Laurana Bush, daughter of Phillip and Shirley Bush. The couple raised two children, Greg (Judy) Daley of Champaign, IL and Andrea (Seth) Arvanites of Belchertown, MA. He was blessed with two grandsons, Ryan and Sean Daley. Bernie felt great pride in their accomplishments and character of the young people they have become. His family meant everything to him.

In retirement, Bernie and Laurie enjoyed travelling to parts of the country- and the world- they never thought they would see. However, when asked where he liked vacationing the most, Bernie consistently answered “My own back yard.” Bernie loved working outdoors and he took great pride in keeping his lawn and garden perfectly groomed.

Mr. Daley is predeceased by his parents and parents-in-law, three of his siblings and their spouses, a brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and niece by marriage. He is survived by his wife Laurie, his son, daughter and their spouses, his grandsons, his brother Douglas, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Calling hours for Mr. Daley will be held from 5-7pm on Friday, March 13, at Sundquist Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be said on Saturday, March 14, at 11:00am at St. Peter’s Church in Lowville.

The family requests that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to Double Play Community Center, 6912 Bardo Road, Lowville, NY 13367 or
