Obituary

CARTHAGE - Arletha F. Arthur, 93, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at The Country Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Centre where she had resided since 2011. Arletha was born on May 30, 1920, in town of Denmark, a daughter of the late Warren and Adella Martzloff Adams. She began her schooling in a one-room school house on the East Road and then attended Lowville Free Academy. Arletha was married to Delevan W. Arthur on September 3, 1938, at the Lowville Methodist Church. The couple made their home on cheese factory hill, Route 812 where they were members of the Lewis County CB Club. Mrs. Arthur was a domestic for local families and cared for and guided many foster children over the years. She retired as a bus driver from Beaver River Central School after 17 years of service and was well-known for her beautiful flower gardens and her "green thumb" talent to grow most anything. Arletha simply loved being "mom" and "grandma" to all and opened her home for many family gatherings. In later years, she enjoyed sitting on the front porch, watching the traffic go by with her dog, "Happy" on her lap. She has loved and been loved by so many. Mrs. Arthur was a former member of the Church of the Nazarene. Her husband passed away on July 22, 1997. Surviving Mrs. Arthur are her children: Barbara Edick of Castorland, Delevan W. Arthur, Jr. and Margaret of Rockford, IL, Linda and James Lee of Lowville and Cynthia and Kevin Doyle of New Bremen; her step-sister, Margaret Russell of Fine; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was known as grandma'" to many, many more. She was predeceased by two brothers: Gerald N. "Jerry" Adams, Sr. and Kenneth V. Adams, Sr. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 19th at the Sundquist Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Bruce W. Lyndaker, Pastor of Emmaus Bible Fellowship Lowville, officiating. Burial will follow at the Lowville Rural Cemetery. Family and friends may call on Friday evening the 18th at the funeral home from 6-9 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made in Arletha's name to: Croghan Ambulance Fund or The Country Manor Nursing Rehab. Centre, with attention to the Activities Department.
