CHAUMONT - Allen J. Bero, 83, formerly of the Pine Grove Road in the town of Watson, died on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at his home. Al is survived by his five children, Susan M. Mitchell of Marathon; Trisha L. McNamee of California; Mark A. and Anita Bero of Brownville; Julie and Jay Emerson of Rochester and Scott E. and Jill Bero of Adams; eleven grandchildren and several great grandchildren and his second wife, Sally. His brother Jack and sister Marie Dillabough predeceased him. Born on May 26, 1928, in Watertown, the son of the late Allen Henry and Margaret Rivers Bero, Al graduated from Immaculate Heart Academy and from Wilson College with an Associates Degree as a Medical Technologist. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Bluebird mine sweeper patrolling the Atlantic Ocean during WWII. On May 24, 1951, he married Rita H. Hubbard at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Watertown. Rita died on Sunday, April 26, 1998. Allen was employed by the Lewis County General Hospital for over 30 years as department head in the lab. He remarried Sally Parker of Watertown and moved to Chaumont. Al was a communicant of St. Peter's Catholic Church, a Life Member Lowville American Legion Post #162, where he served as past commander, county commander, district commander and state vice-commander. He was also a member of the state finance committee for the American Legion. He was a past member of the National Aeronautics and Space committee, a life member of the American Medical Technologists and a member of the Lowville B.P.O. E. Lodge #1605. He also continued to maintain his membership with the Burnt Creek Hunting Club. While living in Lowville, Al was a member of the Lewis County Citizen's Patrol. A funeral mass will be said on Friday, May 11, 2012, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church with Rev. Christopher Carrara, pastor officiating. Military burial will be in Beaches Bridge Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Thursday, May 10th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Sundquist Funeral Home, Lowville where the Lowville American Legion Post #162 will conduct a prayer service at 7:00pm Through his affiliation with the American Legion, Al was proud to be the Past Executive Director on the NYS committee of Boys Nation and currently the Travel Coordinator of Boys State, and memorials in Allen's name may be made to: Boy's State of New York, Inc.,112 State Street, Albany, NY 12207.
