LOWVILLE - Alexander Halliday "Alex" Neiley, 85, "Beloved husband, father, and grandfather" of Lincoln, MA. died Saturday, April 6, 2013 in Lowville. Alex was born April 6, 1928 in Medford, MA., the son of the late Richard Bowdoin and Margaret Halliday Neiley. He graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1952 and entered the U.S. Navy serving active duty for five years, during which time he served on the USS Oriskany as a dive bomber pilot, then 18 years reserve duty being honorably discharged in 1975 as Captain. He served in the Naval Reserve until being called back to duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis where he took an active role as a Navy pilot. He married Diana Maude Biggar on July 20, 1957 at First Church Congregational in Cambridge, Massachusetts with Rev. Calkins and Rev. Dr. Cooke officiating. The couple resided in Lincoln, Massachusetts where Alex worked as senior marketing consultant at the John Hancock Life Insurance Co., home office retiring in 1987. Alex loved salt water fishing and sailing off Cape Cod, MA., photography and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Diana, two daughters, Elizabeth Nelson and her husband Blake and their two daughters, Heather and Paige; Susan Merrell and her husband Charles and their children, Lindsay and her husband Matt Clark, C. Alexander, James, and Elyse; a brother Richard and his wife Patricia; his nieces and nephews. A daughter Margaret Neiley and a sister, Jean Dunphy predeceased him.
