WATSON Ė Thomas Bates, 79, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, February 3rd, 2013 at his home while under the care of his family and Lewis County Hospice.
Tom was born in Watertown on January 8, 1934, the son of the late Ivan and Beulah Leviker Bates and graduated from Lowville Academy in 1952. On October 10, 1953, he married his high school sweetheart Ida Wahl at St. Peterís Catholic Church with Rev. Adrian J. Carroll officiating. They have been married 59 years. Tom and Ida have lived in their present home in Watson 53 years.
Tom was Assessor for many years and served on the Lewis County Junkyard board for 18 years. He retired as a grade 12 Shovel and Crane Operator for the NYS Department of Transportation in September of 1990, having had a combination of 37 years together with the Lewis County Highway Department.
Mr. Bates was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church where he served as an Alter boy under Rev. Anderson in his younger years.
Tom was very proud that he had donated over 100 pints of blood to the American Red Cross.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, and making maple syrup and especially loved to cut and split firewood. He enjoyed watching sports, especially the New York Yankees. For many years, he looked forward to his daily trip into Lowville for breakfast at Lloyd's Diner. He and Ida spent 19 years in Lake Placid, Florida during the winter months making many dear friends.
Surviving Tom are his wife, Ida and their children: Gwenda and Clair Segovis, Gene and Tina Bates, and Timothy and Wanda Bates; his sister and husband, Linda and David Flint; all of Lowville. One grandson, three granddaughters, and several nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the Sperryville Cemetery.
